Healthy Eyes Advantage (HEA) Executive Vice President, Professional Strategies, Lorie Lippiatt, OD, was already excited about bringing Bausch + Lomb ULTRA® Multifocal for Astigmatism contact lenses into her Salem, Ohio, practice before she went to the B+Lieve educational meeting in Orlando in early June. After that meeting, where doctors gathered to learn about the lens technology, fitting characteristics and patient selection for this lens, she was even more enthusiastic.

“With the introduction of this lens, Bausch + Lomb offers a complete solution for our patients,” she says. Bausch + Lomb ULTRA® material is available in single vision, toric, multifocal and, now, multifocal/toric designs. “That makes it easy to keep my patients in the same lens material even as they age and their visual needs change,” she says.

Nationwide, there is a prime opportunity to do more for these patients. Although there are an estimated 32 million presbyopic astigmats in the U.S. today, only a small proportion of them are current contact lens wearers. Many are former wearers, and many more wear spectacles only. Indeed, nearly 80 percent of presbyopic astigmats in this age group say they wear eyeglasses only.1

Dr. Lippiatt says that about half of her contact lens patients are in multifocal lenses, and a number of them require a toric correction in at least one eye. For those who wanted to wear contact lenses, “up until now, one of the options has been to revert to monovision when astigmatic patients need multifocal correction,” she says. “To have a fitting set for multifocal toric lenses at the point of the first visit is a great option for our patients,” she says.

The Bausch + Lomb ULTRA Multifocal for Astigmatism lens incorporates the technologies of the Bausch + Lomb ULTRA® for Presbyopia and Bausch + Lomb ULTRA® for Astigmatism lenses. This innovative soft multifocal toric contact lens combines the MoistureSeal® technology of the proven samfilcon A material with both the 3-Zone Progressive™ multifocal and OpticAlign® toric designs to correct astigmatism and presbyopia simultaneously for excellent wearing comfort, visual clarity and stability.2 The Bausch + Lomb ULTRA Multifocal for Astigmatism contact lens has been engineered with straightforward fitting in mind. Having a soft multifocal toric lens with a full fitting set—and a simple fitting guide—addresses some of the barriers for presbyopic astigmats in contact lenses. The Bausch + Lomb ULTRA Multifocal for Astigmatism lens offers the opportunity to provide clear vision and comfort with contact lenses to a previously underserved patient population.

Fitting sets for this lens will be delivered this summer and Dr. Lippiatt says that she is surprised by how compact the design of the fitting set is. “It includes lenses from +4.00D to -6.00D in cylinder powers of -0.75D, -1.25D and -1.75D. You would think a fitting set for that range would be overwhelming, but it’s not,” she says.

As a result, she’ll be able to demonstrate to candidates while they’re in the exam chair how clear their vision can be. Many presbyopic astigmats believe that they are not candidates for contact lenses. “The clarity and comfort of Bausch + Lomb ULTRA contact lenses are a big plus,” she says, making an immediate positive impression on patients. With the fitting set in office, she can maximize patients’ enthusiasm because they won’t just have to hear about the lens, they’ll have a chance to try it. “Any time that we can reduce the number of fitting visits and turnaround time on products, it reduces patient frustration,” Dr. Lippiatt says.
